An experiment in a new look with a risky pallet.  Red is not the easiest color to control, and I wanted to get brave with the light without blowing it out to much.  I hope you enjoy it.  Thanks for stopping by !!!!!!

The Sweet Science

Here is a painting I have been working on, on and off  throughout the year.  A boxer sneaking in a counter punch from an unorthodox angle can cause a variety of damage :) I am a huge boxing fan and I even had a successful amateur career as a young man, so as an artist it's a great subject matter for me to return to, and one I know all too well.  This one was finished right on time for the release of Creed starring Sylvester Stallone  and Michael B. Jordan.  I can't wait to see the film, being such a huge Rocky fan.  Some of the Photoshop brushes used here were purchased on artist Aaron Blaise's website.  I have several of his brush sets, these were his canvas textured brush set which can be purchased here.  There are several great tutorials and texture sets available there as well.

Danny Trejo

Danny Trejo, born May 16, 1944 is an American actor who has appeared in numerous Hollywood films, often as hypermasculine characters, villains and anti-heroes. His films include Heat (1995), Con Air (1997), and Desperado (1995), the latter with frequent collaborator Robert Rodriguez. Trejo is perhaps most recognized as the character Machete, originally developed by Rodriguez for the Spy Kids series of movies and later expanded into Trejo's own series of films aimed at a more adult audience. He also appeared in TV shows such as Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy.
Below is my caricature of Trejo, in a more serious style than a previous version, which can be viewed here.  The Photoshop brushes I used were purchased on the GrutBrush website.  I bought the Multiset from them.  they are wonderful , check them out and learn more about them Here. Thanks for stopping by, Enjoy !!!!

Manny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton

Manny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton, billed as The Battle of East and West, was a boxing match for The Ring light welterweight championship. The bout was held between Manny Pacquiao of General Santos, Philippines and Ricky Hatton from Manchester, United Kingdom.

The fight was held on 2 May 2009 at the MGM Grand Las Vegas at Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. Hatton was knocked down by Pacquiao twice during the first round, and again in the second round to lose by KO in the 2nd round. Pacquiao's win makes him one of only two (the other being Oscar De La Hoya) to win six world titles in six different weight divisions at that time (he won his seventh world title in seventh weight division on 14 November 2009 against Miguel Cotto). As of now Manny "Pac-Man) Pacquiao is the first and only eight-division world champion, in which he has won ten world titles, as well as the first to win the lineal championship in four different weight classes. According to Forbes, he was the 2nd highest paid athlete in the world as of 2015. The first highest paid is Floyd "Money" Mayweather who beat Pac-man in a unanimous decision in May of this year.

Below is a digital painting that  I completed recently, exploring a slightly different technique and style than my previous pieces.  Using Photoshop cs6 and Kyle's custom brushes, which you can purchase here.  Kyle has a lot of great brush sets that mimic all kinds of traditional media. Check them out and thanks for stopping by, enjoy!!! and stay inspired :)

Alfred Hitchcock

Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock, (13 August 1899 – 29 April 1980) was an English film director and producer, often nicknamed "The Master of Suspense". He pioneered many elements of the suspense and psychological thriller genres. He had a successful career in British cinema with both silent films and early talkies, and became renowned as England's best director. Hitchcock moved to Hollywood in 1939 and became a US citizen in 1955.

Over a career spanning half a century, Hitchcock fashioned for himself a recognizable directorial style. His stylistic trademarks include the use of camera movement that mimics a person's gaze, forcing viewers to engage in a form of voyeurism. In addition, he framed shots to maximize anxiety, fear, or empathy, and used innovative forms of film editing. His work often features fugitives on the run alongside "icy blonde" female characters. Many of Hitchcock's films have twist endings and thrilling plots featuring depictions of murder and other violence. Many of the mysteries, however, are used as decoys or "MacGuffins" that serve the films' themes and the psychological examinations of their characters. Hitchcock's films also borrow many themes from psychoanalysis and sometimes feature strong sexual overtones. He became a highly visible public figure through interviews, movie trailers, cameo appearances in his own films, and the ten years in which he hosted the television program Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

Hitchcock directed more than fifty feature films in a career spanning six decades and is often regarded as the greatest British filmmaker. He came first in a 2007 poll of film critics in Britain's Daily Telegraph, which said: "Unquestionably the greatest filmmaker to emerge from these islands, Hitchcock did more than any director to shape modern cinema, which would be utterly different without him. His flair was for narrative, cruelly withholding crucial information (from his characters and from viewers) and engaging the emotions of the audience like no one else." In 2002, the magazine MovieMaker named Hitchcock the most influential filmmaker of all time.

I remember him mostly for his movies, Psycho, Rear Window, The Birds, and Vertigo.  Below is my caricature / Portrait of Alfred Hitchcock.  Thanks for stopping by, Enjoy!!!

Stan Lee and Spidey

It's been awhile since my last post.  Been busy with client work and not much time for personal pieces.  I finally had a minute to finish up this painting (or at least, this is as far as I am going to take it).  Stan "the man" Lee taking a selfie with your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.  I can go on for ever about how inspirational this man has been to myself and so many, so rather than ramble on, I will simply say "Nuff' Said" .  Thanks for stopping by, Enjoy!!!!

Pin Up Art

This one took me a good part of the year to complete, on and off between client work.  At one point I almost gave up on it all together.  Glad I kept messing with it though.  I don't usually work things to this level of realism, but I felt this piece looked better this way than my usual loose painterly look.  I used Painter 2015 and Photoshop cs6, With Artist Mike Thompson's Corel painter Workspace and brushes. Thanks for checking it out, Enjoy !!!!

T.C.B Irons Custom Handmade Tattoo Machines

I partnered up with My friends (Jason Lightsey and Todd Boling) over at T.C.B Irons to work on several promotional art pieces for their company. They make quality Handmade tattoo machines as well as restoration on older models. The guys recently stopped by the Tattoo shop where I work on the weekends and brought me a custom Liner and Shader for me to work with. I was very impressed by the performance of both machines and give them my highest recommendation. I got the machines in the green and orange color in memory of my boxing coach, Tommy Brunette who was Irish and always encouraged me to pursue my art. R.I.P. Tommy. Below is a picture of my new machines courtesy of T.C.B. Irons followed by a small bird tattoo that I got to break the machines in on. If you are a tattoo artist or looking to start tattooing and are interested in purchasing a great running machine head on over to the site here , or follow the companies Facebook page here . I'll be sharing all the work I do for them as soon as I can. Also, if you are looking for me to do a custom tattoo for you and you are in the Birmingham Alabama area , I can be found at the Pelham location of Tattoo Expression on the weekends. The shop # 2015-620-0580 . Thanks for stopping by, Enjoy!!!!

R.I.P. Christopher Lee

From wikipedia : Sir Christopher Frank Carandini Lee, (27 May 1922 – 7 June 2015) was an English actor, singer and author. With a career spanning nearly 70 years, Lee initially portrayed villains and became best known for his role as Count Dracula in a sequence of Hammer Horror films. His other film roles include Francisco Scaramanga in the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), Saruman in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001–2003) and The Hobbit film trilogy (2012–2014), and Count Dooku in the final two films of the Star Wars prequel trilogy (2002 and 2005). Lee was knighted for services to drama and charity in 2009, received the BAFTA Fellowship in 2011 and received the BFI Fellowship in 2013. Lee considered his best performance to be that of Pakistan's founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the biopic Jinnah (1998), and his best film to be the British horror film The Wicker Man (1973). Always noted as an actor for his deep strong voice, Lee was also known for his singing ability, recording various opera and musical pieces between 1986 and 1998 and the symphonic metal album Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross in 2010 after having worked with several metal bands since 2005. The heavy metal follow-up titled Charlemagne: The Omens of Death was released on 27 May 2013. He was honoured with the "Spirit of Metal" award at the 2010 Metal Hammer Golden God awards ceremony. Lee died at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on 7 June 2015 at 8:30 am after being admitted for respiratory problems and heart failure, shortly after celebrating his 93rd birthday there. His wife delayed the public announcement until 11 June in order to break the news to their family. He will be missed and remembered for all of his amazing roles. Below is my homage to Lee in the form of a caricature of him as Saruman from LOTR and The Hobbit films. Thanks for stopping by, Enjoy !!!!

Environment Thumbnails

Thumb, Th, Thumb, Thumb.... Thuuuuumbs.  Here are a bunch of thumbnails for the visual development of a project.  Done quick and loosely with custom shapes and the lasso tool in Photoshop.  Each one of these will be enlarged and detailed, adding characters etc., but will remain very graphic in design.  These are just the initial concepts at this point, but I got the o.k. to share them, so here they are.  Thanks for stopping by, Enjoy !!!

Droids and Vehicles

Here are a couple of "Kit-Bashed" droid and vehicle designs put together quickly using some old silhouette thumbnails and Oleg Vdovenko's cheat packs.  It's a great and fun way to concept anything that needs techy greebles to give the illusion of details.  I will be painting over a lot of it and placing them in environments.  This is just a good jump off point to start thumb nailing ideas quickly.  Below are some of the designs followed by the silos that I used as shapes to build off of.  The first pic are just silos made with brushes, then I build on those with Photoshop shapes, then build further with the line work.  The shapes were inspired by bugs, Star Wars, and anime movie Robot Carnival.  Thanks for stopping by, Enjoy !!!!
