Stan Lee and Spidey

It's been awhile since my last post.  Been busy with client work and not much time for personal pieces.  I finally had a minute to finish up this painting (or at least, this is as far as I am going to take it).  Stan "the man" Lee taking a selfie with your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.  I can go on for ever about how inspirational this man has been to myself and so many, so rather than ramble on, I will simply say "Nuff' Said" .  Thanks for stopping by, Enjoy!!!!

Marilyn Monroe

From Wikipedia: Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson; June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962) was an American actress, model, and singer, who became a major sex symbol, starring in a number of commercially successful motion pictures during the 1950s and early 1960s. After spending much of her childhood in foster homes, Monroe began a career as a model, which led to a film contract in 1946 with Twentieth Century-Fox. Her early film appearances were minor, but her performances in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve (both 1950), drew attention. Philip Seymour Hoffman

From Wikipedia: Philip Seymour Hoffman (July 23, 1967 – February 2, 2014) was an American actor and director. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the 2005 biographical film Capote, was nominated three times for Best Supporting Actor and also received three Tony Award nominations for his work in theater. Hoffman began his acting career in 1991, and the following year he began to appear in films. He gained recognition for his supporting work in a series of notable films, including Scent of a Woman (1992), Twister (1996), Boogie Nights (1997), The Big Lebowski (1998), Patch Adams (1998), Magnolia (1999), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), Almost Famous (2000), Red Dragon (2002), 25th Hour (2002), Punch-Drunk Love (2002) and Cold Mountain (2003). In 2005, Hoffman played the title role in Capote, for which he won multiple acting awards. His three other Academy Award nominations came for his supporting work in Charlie Wilson's War (2007), Doubt (2008) and The Master (2012). Studying The Photos

Here are a couple of Studies done from Photo Reference for an assignment from Noah Bradley's Art Camp. The first pic is a series of Thumbnail compositions of Environments from various pics off the internet. I added a few imaginative elements in and changed color and composition as I see fit. Next is a portrait of an old man, I figured I would mix up the studies subject matter and use subjects that benefit me. This guy for instance can lend himself to some great Horror art:) where the enviro thumbnails can also be used for sci-fi background etc. The wrinkles were a great practice for me. And lastly, a study of a bird from a pic I took at the Zoo. This one was good to study and utilize for possible creature design. Thanks for stopping by, Enjoy!!!

Dwight Arrington Myers (May 24, 1967 – November 8, 2011, better known as Heavy D, was a Jamaican-born American actor, rapper, record producer, singer and former leader of Heavy D & the Boyz. Here is an homage I did today for this Hip Hop legend.

Caricature demo

Quick caricature demo I did for my artist friend, Ricky Ranson at work today. Not paying attention to proportions, but showing him my techniques. This took about 30-40 minutes in photoshop using nothing but a soft air brush. From here I would fix all the proprtions, tighten things up and maybe texture. It was enough for now to give the artist the basic starting point to working this way.

caricature sketching

Here's some caricature sketches done directly in Photoshop with no real sketch lines as a start.  Instead I sketched with tonal values, concentrating on the shapes and forms of the face and it's features.  This is a technique I learned from watching artist like Joe Bluhm and Jason Seiler work.  These are not meant to be finished by any means, they are just sketches, so they are full of mistakes, but it's fun and a great learning process to work this way.  If I wanted to refine these, it would not be difficult to do from this stage.
