New 2015 Doodles

The Silver Cord

So this is my first blog post of 2015, and I have some great news to share.  A project I had the great privilege of working on is finally done and available for purchase online and in bookstores nationwide.  The Silver Cord A huge 400 plus page graphic novel about newly conscious robots in a religious war with ancient jealous angels, and a young half-breed girl who must save them all . And here are shots of me signing autographs for the fans that backed the Kickstarter campaign, along with some shots of the individual doodles I did for each page I signed. About 250 unique doodles was my way of saying thanks to the fans for being so awesome.

Basket ball playing Mechs, Androids, and Robots

Here are a few speed paintings I did all with a Mech theme to them. This first concept is an homage to basketball great, number 23 of The Chicago Bulls, Michael "Air" Jordan. This started out as a quick digital sculpt in z-brush to pull out some interesting shapes that I could paint over. He even has his Nikeez on:) next, this concept started out as a photo bashing, then painted over to give me a Riot police of the future. Mech Suits and Plein Air Painting

I finished up this Mech today after taking my laptop to the park for some Plein Air painting. The Mech sort of reminds me of the anime Guyver. I still have a bunch of the VHS's somewhere:) These thumbnail studies were done for Noah Bradley's 12 week summer boot camp. This was not easy to do digitally. I took an umbrella with me to try and block the glare on the screen, but to no avail. I could not tell what colors I was using at all. Still it was a great exercise and I will definitely do more when I can, hopefully with a better set up.

Ducati

Here is another Transformer I am working on. This time a female bot that turns into a pink Ducati( I thought it would be a nice challenge) . I'll be working on a body as well, but for now here is a work in progress shot. Thanks for stopping by. Enjoy!!!!

Lamborghini Aventador

Here is some Transformer fan art that I put together for fun and practice. It's left really rough but works as a concept I think. The Lamborghini Aventador LP 700–4 is a two-door, two-seater sports car publicly unveiled by Lamborghini at the Geneva Motor Show on 28 February 2011, five months after its initial unveiling in Sant'Agata Bolognese. In keeping with Lamborghini tradition, the Aventador is named after a bull. This baby goes 0–62 mph in 2.9 seconds. Thanks for stopping by, Enjoy!!!!

Vikings and Robots

With the giant robot/monster movie Pacific Rim ( Director Guillermo del Toro) hitting the big screen soon, and talk of a possible Viking Movie called Berserker (Director Mel Gibson)getting the early treatment , and the new series "Vikings" airing on the History Channel, I thought it would be a cool idea to do a concept piece that brought the two subjects of Vikings and Robots together. I guess I'll leave it up to the viewer to interpret why these two subjects would ever collide. Could the Vikings have gone through a time portal somewhere in the Bermuda triangle? Or maybe the Robot was sent into the past, or what if Poseidon (Neptune)was a giant Mech. LOL I'll leave that up to you. For me, it was cool to paint on my free time in-between art jobs. BlueSky Studios Robots

From Wikipedia: Robots is a 2005 American computer animated comic science fiction film produced by Blue Sky Studios for Twentieth Century Fox, and was released theatrically on March 11, 2005. The story was created by Chris Wedge and William Joyce, a children's book author/illustrator. The two were trying to create a film version of Joyce's book Santa Calls but instead they came up with a movie about robots. Joyce served as producer and production designer for the film. It features the voices of Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, Greg Kinnear, Mel Brooks, Amanda Bynes, Drew Carey and Robin Williams. Here are some thumbnail compositions I did from screen grabs of the film. trying to focus mostly on color, mood and composition with these studies. I just love this movie, it's one of my favorite. The guys at Bluesky studios did an awesome job. I highly recommend the Art Of Robots book as well. Theses thumbnails are done at a smaller scale then what is posted here, but I increased the size so they are easier to view. A bit about my process: To block these in quickly I usually start off with a gradient for the background, then keeping everything on separate layers, I block in the simple forms with either shapes or the lasso and line tools (concentrating on the basic shapes that make up all of the elements in the composition). I then start to render those shapes with the proper lighting according to my reference picture. The come the details. It seems to come together very quickly when I do it this way:) I try to keep each study between 1 to 2 hours. I feel this exercise has helped me get a better handle on composition, color theory and design. If you have as many movies as I do, then you have an endless amount of reference pics, so no excuses, study from the pros, get painting and get better:) Thanks for stopping by, Enjoy!!!

Spidermech

This is a quick speedpainting I did while watching the original Star Wars and John Carter movies. Trying out a few things, I used mostly a pallet knife for this one. Enjoy!!!

Some Process shots

Here is a concept of a mech possibly inspecting some kind of mines? Not sure what they are but I thought it was alright to leave vague both in detail and description. It works as a concept though. Below the piece are some process shots, so you can see the progression from abstract to something more recognizable.

More Than Meets The Eye

A couple of quick and dirty Transformers inspired helmet designs. These were generated using the mirror functions in Alchemy and Corel Painter 12, the tweaking and some quick textures in Photoshop. It really is just two different helmets that were tweaked to make a few more ideas.

Battle Mechs

These are a couple of battle mechs I did for a studio in Jordan called Vexel Studios. These were not taken to completion but rather serves as concepts to establish 2 different style variations. The first one was done using the shape tool in photoshop to generate an interesting silhouette that I then painted over. The second mech was started as a random chaotic shape in a program called alchemy with the mirror option turned on. It was then carried into photoshop for a paint over. Both are obviously inspired by japanese style robots and mech.

Roc' em Soc'em Robot

This is an assignment I did for Ryan Woods Corel Painter course at Schoolism.com. I wanted to do a cartoony boxing robot inspired by Blue sky studio's Robots. The Assignment called for a grey scaled textured version and a painted colored version of the character. I think this old guy still has some punch left in him...
