Vikings and Robots

With the giant robot/monster movie Pacific Rim ( Director Guillermo del Toro) hitting the big screen soon, and talk of a possible Viking Movie called Berserker (Director Mel Gibson)getting the early treatment , and the new series "Vikings" airing on the History Channel, I thought it would be a cool idea to do a concept piece that brought the two subjects of Vikings and Robots together. I guess I'll leave it up to the viewer to interpret why these two subjects would ever collide. Could the Vikings have gone through a time portal somewhere in the Bermuda triangle? Or maybe the Robot was sent into the past, or what if Poseidon (Neptune)was a giant Mech. LOL I'll leave that up to you. For me, it was cool to paint on my free time in-between art jobs. Shamayim

A concept I put together after watching Thor and looking at the Art Of Thor Book. That explains the "rainbow bridge looking thing" lol The title Shamayim is taken for the Hebrew word for heaven or sky in the bible. I chose to put a few traditional christian symbols in there like , the tree and the couple in the lower left foreground. The floating thingies were loosely inspired by the movie Knowing that starred actor Nicholas Cage. I tried to give the sea an other worldly glass like appearance and the technology is meant to look otherworldly as well. Thanks for looking

Loch Ness Monster

The Loch Ness Monster (Scottish Gaelic Niseag) or Nessie is a cryptid that is reputed to inhabit Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. The most frequent speculation is that the creature represents a line of long-surviving plesiosaurs. It is similar to other supposed lake monsters in Scotland and elsewhere, though its description varies from one account to the next. Here is my version of what this beestie might look like. I wanted to do a painting that had a bit of an impressionism look to it, so this was as good an excuse as any. I think the poor fisherman could have used more life and action, but then again he may just be frozen stiff from fear. lol Below is the finished piece, followed by a shot with a Fibonacci Spiral which I used to aid me in guiding the viewers eye through the composition. And lastly a close-up of the main subjects.

Mermaid

Your eyes start to play tricks on you when your out at sea for too long, and it's magic hour. Be warned: Never trust a big butt and a smile :) I have always loved the whole Mermaid mythos, I may do an evil version to show what she really looks like once she lures you in. I was glad that they included some mermaids in Pirates Of The Caribbean 4. It was my favorite part of the film.

Speedpainting

Speedpainting is a good way to get background concepts down quickly. I try to limit my time to about an hour or so. Here is a quick painting in photoshop of a simple study of a cave. The character was thrown in for a size reference. The next is a paint over of an earlier sketch based on a mythological character called Acephali. The Acephali are a race of beings from Libya, whose heads are either removable or lie in their chests. In the beginning, they were normal but had an altercation with their gods that resulted in them being decapitated. The ones with the removable heads usually carry them in their arms. They are described by historians Herodotus and Josephus. Of course, I had to give it a bit of a Sci-Fi makeover.
