Spawn

I recently completed this Spawn commission piece for a friend and fellow tattoo artist (huge Spawn fan).  For those that may not know, Spawn is a fictional character, an anti-hero that appears in a monthly comic book of the same name published by Image Comics as well as annual compilations, mini-series specials written by guest authors and artists and numerous cross-over story-lines in other comic books. Created by writer/artist Todd McFarlane, the character first appeared in Spawn #1 (May 1992). Spawn was ranked 60th on Wizard magazine's list of the Top 200 Comic Book Characters of All Time, 50th on Empire magazine's list of The 50 Greatest Comic Book Characters and 36th on IGN's 2011 Top 100 Comic Book Heroes.  I believe I have the first 50 or so issues all bagged and boarded and then a bunch of other issues that I picked up throughout the years. Being a fan myself (not as big of a fan as my friend), this was a fun project for me to work on.  Below is the finished piece followed by a few progress shots. Also if you haven't had the chance yet, head on over to the Threadless site and vote for my Heavy Metal magazine cover submission, there is only 3 days left to vote.  Score my image HERE.  Thanks for stopping by, Enjoy !!!!

Orangutan

I had a good time painting this Orangutan and playing around with different textured brushes.  After seeing the trailer for the new Jungle Book movie I felt like painting this guy.  I find it funny that actor Christopher Walken is the voice of king Louie.  The character Maurice from The Planet Of The Apes was also one of my favorites. In other news, I entered a Heavy Magazine cover contest recently.  If you have a chance please vote for my image, which I have attached below and help spread the word for me.  You can vote HERE. There is only 5 days left to vote for me, so make sure and head on over.  The image I submitted to the contest is below also.  Thanks for stopping by Enjoy !!!!

Heavy Metal Magazine

So I am happy and proud to announce that I am featured in this month's issue of Heavy Metal Magazine's artist showcase section. Thanks to my good friend Kevin Eastman co-creator of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the rest of the crew for allowing me to be a part of such a historical art magazine in the Sci-Fi and Fantasy genre. I collected Heavy Metal as a young man and was so inspired by all the great artwork that graced the covers and interiors every month. Artist like Moebius, Frazetta, Vaughn Bode, Jeffrey Jones, Bernie Wrightson, H.R. Giger, Simon Bisley, Azpiri, Frazatto, Milo Manara, Arthur Suydam, and the list goes on and on, have contributed to the magazine's amazing artwork over the years. You can read more about the magazine on wikipedia here. This month's issue is no exception, I'm definitely in good company with the awesome talent, so I hope everybody picks up a copy :) Below is the cover featuring art by uber talented fantasy artist Michael C. R.I.P. Jean Giraud AKA Moebius

Sad news today, I woke up the find out that one of my heroes has past. Rest In Peace friend. Jean Henri Gaston Giraud (8 May 1938 – 10 March 2012)[1][2] was a French comics artist, working in the French tradition of bandes dessineés. Giraud earned worldwide fame, not only under his own name but also under the pseudonym Mœbius, and to a lesser extent Gir, the latter appearing mostly in the form of a boxed signature at the bottom of the artist's paintings.

Among his most famous creation was the Western comic series "Blueberry" which he cocreated with Jean-Michel Charlier, one of the first Western anti-heroes to appear in comics. Under the pseudonym Moebius he created a wide range of science fiction and and fantasy comics in a highly imaginative and surreal almost abstract style, the most famous of which are Arzach and the Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius, and the The Incal. Blueberry was adapted for the screen in 2004. Many of his strips were reprinted here in the states in Heavy Metal magazine.

He died of cancer on 10 March 2012 at age 73 in Paris.
